The spot-fin porcupinefish (Diodon hystrix) is a cool ocean fish. It's also called the spotted porcupinefish or just porcupinefish. This fish belongs to a group of fish known as Diodontidae.

What Does the Porcupinefish Look Like?

The spot-fin porcupinefish is a medium-sized fish. It can grow up to about 91 centimeters (about 3 feet) long! But most of the time, they are around 40 centimeters (about 1.3 feet).

This fish has a long body and a round head. It has big, round eyes that stick out and a large mouth that often stays open. Its fins are special:

  • Its pectoral fins (side fins) are big.
  • It doesn't have pelvic fins (bottom fins).
  • Its anal fin (bottom back fin) and dorsal fin (top back fin) are close to its tail.
  • These back fins move together when the fish swims.

The porcupinefish has smooth, strong skin. Instead of regular scales, it has spines! Its body is usually light brown or sandy yellow. It has dark patches and many small black spots all over.

How Does the Porcupinefish Protect Itself?

When a porcupinefish feels scared, it has a super cool trick! It can swallow a lot of water. This makes its body puff up like a balloon. When it inflates, its spines also stand up. This makes the fish look much bigger and spikier. It helps scare away any animals that might want to eat it.

This fish also has a secret weapon inside its body. It has a special natural chemical called tetrodotoxin. This toxin is found in parts like its liver, skin, and other organs. This chemical is another way the fish protects itself from predators.

Where Do Porcupinefish Live?

You can find the porcupinefish all over the world! They live in warm, tropical and subtropical ocean waters. They have even been seen a couple of times in the Mediterranean Sea.

When porcupinefish are young, they swim in the open ocean. They stay there until they are about 20 centimeters long. As adults, they prefer to live in calm ocean areas like lagoons. They also like the top parts of coral or rocky reefs. You can find them from about 1 to 50 meters deep. During the day, they often hide under ledges or in caves.

What Do Porcupinefish Eat?

The porcupinefish is a carnivore, meaning it eats other animals. Its favorite foods include:

How Do Porcupinefish Behave?

Most of the time, the porcupinefish likes to be alone. They only get together during mating season. These fish are also nocturnal, which means they are most active at night. They are especially busy around sunset and sunrise.
