This means it is a special area that the government counts for population, but it is not officially a city or town. Spottsville was once a place where people mined coal. In 2020, about 274 people lived there.

Spottsville's Location and Bridges
Spottsville is located in a great spot! U.S. Route 60 runs along its northern side. The beautiful Green River flows along its eastern side.
The Green River Bridges
The first bridge over the Green River in Spottsville opened on December 17, 1931. It was an important link for the community. Later, in 2013, the bridge was found to be too narrow and not strong enough. A brand new Spottsville Bridge was finished in 2022. A special moment happened when Irma Stanley Day, who had cut the ribbon for the first bridge in 1931, also cut the ribbon for the new one!
Locks and Turning Bridges
In Spottsville, you can find the Green River Lock & Dam. If you travel east and cross the US-60 bridge over the Green River, you can see the lock on your right. Locks are like water elevators that help boats move between different water levels. You can still see parts of the old locks that were replaced in the mid-1960s. On your left, you might see a turning bridge for trains. This bridge can turn to let barges pass through on the river.
Connecting Roads
US-60 is a major road that connects Spottsville to other towns. If you go east on US-60, you will reach Owensboro, which is about 19 miles away. If you go west, you will get to Henderson, the main town of Henderson County, about 11 miles away.
Education in Spottsville
Spottsville has one elementary school. This school serves all the children in the eastern part of Henderson County. This includes nearby communities like Beals, Baskett, and Reed.
A Look at School History
The very first Spottsville school taught students of all ages. It was special because it offered Henderson County's first school bus service back in 1920! Sadly, this original school building burned down in March 1932.
Spottsville's History and Name
Spottsville was named after a brave soldier, Major Samuel Spotts. He was famous for firing the first shot at the Battle of New Orleans.
Early Visitors and Native Peoples
Long ago, in 1541, the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto visited this area. His army faced attacks near the Ohio River from Native American tribes. These tribes were known by names like Kashinampo, Quizqui, and the Chiska Cherokee.
Coal Mining in Spottsville
From 1904 to 1911, many men worked in Spottsville's coal mines. The Green River Coal Company employed as many as 116 miners. Later, from 1911 to 1924, the Pittsburgh Coal Company also operated a coal camp here, with about 75 men working in the mines.
