Sprachbund facts for kids
A sprachbund is a group of languages spoken in the same area. These languages become similar because the people who speak them live close together. They also talk to each other all the time. Because of these similarities, the languages sometimes look like they belong to the same language family, even if they don't.
For example, in India, many different languages and dialects are spoken. People there often talk with others who speak a different first language. Because of this, the languages in India often start to share similar grammar rules, vocabulary, and sounds.

How Languages Change Together
When people from different language groups live and work together, their languages can start to influence each other. This is like how friends might start using some of the same words or phrases. Over a long time, these shared features can become a regular part of the languages.
East Asian Languages and Chinese Influence
In East Asia, China had a big influence on nearby countries like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. This area is sometimes called the "sinosphere," which means the Chinese area of influence.
Not only did people in these countries learn to write using Chinese characters, but they also borrowed many words from Chinese. These borrowed words are called loanwords. This sharing of writing and words made their languages more similar in some ways.
The Altaic Language Idea
Long ago, some linguists (people who study languages) thought that languages like Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Turkish, and Finnish were all part of one big group called the Altaic language family.
They thought this because these languages had similar features. For example, they often used a Subject-Verb-Object (word order) structure. They also had a grammar style called agglutinating, where words are formed by adding many small parts together.
However, most linguists today no longer believe that the Altaic language family ever truly existed. Instead, they think these languages became more similar over time because they were part of a sprachbund. This is different from how most related languages change. Usually, languages from the same family become more different over time as they spread out. But in a sprachbund, languages become more alike because of constant contact.
