The Sprague River is a river in southwestern Oregon, United States. It flows for about 75 miles (121 km) (121 km). This river is a branch of the Williamson River. It helps drain a dry, volcanic plateau area. This area is found east of the Cascade Range mountains. The Sprague River is part of the larger Klamath River system.

Where the Sprague River Starts

The Sprague River begins in eastern Klamath County. It forms when two smaller rivers meet. These are called the North Fork Sprague River and the South Fork Sprague River. This meeting point is about 35 miles (56 km) (56 km) east of Klamath Falls.

North Fork Sprague River

The North Fork Sprague River is about 30 miles (48 km) (48 km) long. It starts in southwestern Lake County. This area is within the Fremont National Forest. It begins near a place called Gearhart Mountain. From there, it flows towards the southwest.

South Fork Sprague River

The South Fork Sprague River is also about 30 miles (48 km) (48 km) long. It starts northeast of Quartz Mountain Pass. This fork flows towards the west-northwest.

The River's Journey

After the North and South Forks join, the main Sprague River flows west. It travels through a wide area known as the Sprague Valley. Along its path, it passes by small towns. These towns include Bly, Beatty, and Sprague River.

The Sprague River eventually joins the Williamson River. This happens from the east, near the town of Chiloquin. This meeting point is about 10 miles (16 km) (16 km) north of where the Williamson River flows into Upper Klamath Lake.

Other Rivers Joining the Sprague

Another river, the Sycan River, flows into the Sprague River. This happens from the north, near the town of Beatty.

Fishing in the Sprague River

The Sprague River and its smaller branches are famous for fishing. Many people enjoy catching trout here. The fishing is considered excellent in these waters.
