Places in Harrisville Township
- Springport is a small, unincorporated community. This means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own local government like a city or village. It's found along U.S. Route 23 right on the shores of Lake Huron.
The Holden family first settled in this area in 1846. The community grew in 1865 when Joseph Van Buskirk built a store and a mill. It was first called Sunflower Hill. People also knew it as South Harrisville because it was close to the city of Harrisville. Later, it became known as Springport because of the many cold springs in the area.
Geography and Nature
Harrisville Township covers about 30.35 square miles (78.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 30.33 square miles (78.5 square kilometers), is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water.
The township has a beautiful coastline along Lake Huron. A large part of Harrisville State Park is located within the township. The park also stretches into the city of Harrisville.
Main Roads
US 23 is a major highway that runs along the eastern side of the township. It follows the coast near Lake Huron.
M-72 is another important road. It goes from west to east through the middle of the township and into the city of Harrisville.
