Sproughton (SPRAW-tən) is a lovely village in Suffolk, England. It's located just west of the larger town of Ipswich. Sproughton is part of the Babergh area.
This village has a church, a primary school, and a friendly pub called The Wild Man. You can also find a community shop and various local groups here. The River Gipping flows right through the village, adding to its charm. Nearby villages include Bramford and Burstall.
All Saints Church, Sproughton
The main church in Sproughton is called All Saints Church. It's an Anglican parish church that was built a very long time ago, in the 14th century. That means it's over 600 years old!
The church was later repaired and updated in the second half of the 1800s. This work was done by an architect from Ipswich named Frederick Barnes.
Historical Homes: Chantry and Sproughton Hall
Sproughton is home to some interesting historical houses. One of these is Sproughton Chantry. This old house and its land were the beginning of what is now Chantry Park. This park is located on the western edge of Ipswich.
A poet named Ann Candler lived in Sproughton after she got married in 1762. She faced some tough times, as her husband was often away serving in the militia, and she had a growing family.
In 1785, while living in the Tattingstone workhouse, Ann wrote a poem. It was to remember Metcalfe Russell, a kind person who had helped her. Metcalfe Russell was a lawyer who bought the Chantry house in 1772. After he passed away, the Chantry was left to a relative named Michael Collinson.
Another important historical house in the village is Sproughton Hall. It's not far from the Chantry. This hall was built by a person called Sir Robert Harland, 1st Baronet.
