Stockwell Orphanage, a home for children

Spurgeon's first started as a home for children called an orphanage. It was named Stockwell Orphanage. Charles Spurgeon opened it in 1867. This home was in Stockwell, London, where Stockwell Park Estate is today.

The orphanage first opened its doors on September 9, 1869. At the start, it was only for boys. The home could look after 250 children. These children received food, clothes, and an education at the orphanage.

Daily Life at the Orphanage

It cost about £5,000 each year to run the orphanage. This money mostly came from donations. People gave money to help the children.

The Stockwell Orphanage was a home for boys aged six to ten who did not have fathers. Even though the orphanage was started by Baptists, children of any religion were welcome there. In 1879, more buildings were added. This meant that girls could also live at the orphanage.

From Orphanage to Charity

The Stockwell Orphanage stayed open until London was bombed during the Second World War. After the war, it changed its name to Spurgeon's Child Care. Later, it became known simply as Spurgeon's.

Today, Spurgeon's mainly works in England. But it also has projects in other countries. They help children and families in places like Mexico, Africa, and Eastern Europe.
