St. Isidore is a small community called a hamlet in northwest Alberta, Canada. It is part of Northern Sunrise County. You can find it about 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of the town of Peace River.

St. Isidore is surrounded by nature. Deep valleys, called ravines, are on its north and south sides. These ravines were formed by Pat's Creek and its smaller streams. Pine forests grow all around these beautiful valleys.

In 2007, a group called the St. Isidore Development Committee worked to help the community grow. They held a special draw for land lots. This helped more people find places to live in St. Isidore.

Discover the History of St. Isidore

St. Isidore gets its name from Saint Isidore. He is a special saint known for being a great farm worker.

The hamlet was started in 1953 by seven families. They came all the way from the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean area in Quebec. A group called the Union des Cultivateurs Catholiques helped them. This group supported farmers and helped them work together.

St. Isidore was one of the last communities settled by people moving from Quebec after World War II. Because of this, it has kept a lot of its original culture. Even today, the community shows a strong spirit of cooperation and family.

Celebrate Culture at St. Isidore's Carnaval

Every year, during the third weekend of February, St. Isidore hosts a fun event called the Carnaval de St. Isidore. It takes place at the St. Isidore Cultural Centre.

This Carnaval is like the famous Quebec Winter Carnival. It celebrates the community's French-Canadian roots. But it also includes the spirit of Alberta's French communities.

Snow Sculpting Fun

One of the main events is the snow sculpting competition. The St. Isidore Cultural Centre chooses a different theme each year. Past themes have included "Asterix & Obelix" and "Super Z’héros."

There are different groups for sculptors. You can find professional artists, amateurs, and even a youth category.

More Carnaval Activities

The Carnaval also has lots of other exciting things to do:

  • Enjoy traditional French folk music and modern songs.
  • See local talented performers.
  • Taste delicious traditional French food.
  • Go for fun sleigh rides.
  • Watch log sawing competitions.

During the Carnaval, teenage volunteers are chosen as "ducs et duchesses." They sell tickets, and the top sellers are crowned the King and Queen of the Carnaval!
