St Barnabas' Church is a church located on Watery Lane in Darwen, Lancashire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church. This means it's a local church that serves the community in its area. It is part of the larger diocese of Blackburn and works closely with St Mary's Church in Grimehills.
The church was built a long time ago, in 1884. It started as a "mission church," which is a church built to serve a new or growing community. The church was designed by a famous architectural team from Lancaster called Paley and Austin. It cost about £1,462 to build back then, which was a lot of money! The church was big enough to seat 360 people.
Church Design and Materials
St Barnabas' Church is built from strong stone. Its roof is made of Westmorland slate, which is a type of rock used for roofing. On top of the church, there is a small tower called a bellcote. This bellcote has a pointed roof, also made of slate.
Windows and Stained Glass
The windows of the church are square-shaped. Inside, you can see beautiful stained glass windows. These colorful windows were added in 1963 by a company called Shrigley and Hunt. Stained glass windows often tell stories from the Bible or show important figures.
