History of St Catherine's Church
How the Church Started
In 1862, a kind lady named Augusta Fitzalan-Howard, Duchess of Norfolk, paid for a new church to be built in Littlehampton. She also helped build another church called St John the Evangelist Church in Heron's Ghyll. She hired Matthew Ellison Hadfield to design several buildings in Littlehampton. These plans included a church, a presbytery (a house for priests), and a school.
However, the plans changed a bit. In the end, only a presbytery and the church were built. The first church building was quite simple. It only had a main area called a nave and a special area near the altar called a sanctuary.
Building More of the Church
From 1883 to 1884, more construction work was done on the church. This part was also designed by Hadfield. An extra aisle (a side section) was added to the church. This made the church bigger and able to hold more people. A gallery, which is like a balcony inside the church, was also built during this time.
Expanding the Church in 1904
In 1904, the church was made even larger. The architectural work for this expansion was done by a company called Pugin & Pugin. The building was extended towards the east, making the sanctuary area bigger. A new chapel, called St Joseph's Chapel, was added to the north side of the church. It even had its own separate entrance.
During this expansion, two confessionals (small rooms for confession) were built. A new altar (the table where religious services are held) and a pulpit (a raised stand for preaching) were also added. The beautiful stained glass windows that were put in were made by a company from Hove.
