St Charles Borromeo is a historic Catholic church located in Hull, England. It belongs to the Diocese of Middlesbrough. This church is special because it is the oldest Catholic parish church in Hull built after the Reformation. In 2016, it was recognized as a Grade I listed building, which means it's a very important historical building.

A Look Back: Church History

Around 1774, a priest named Father Charles Howard came to Hull. His job was to serve the small group of Catholic people living there. In 1779, a small chapel was built for them in an area called Posterngate.

However, this chapel was sadly destroyed in 1780 during events known as the Gordon Riots. These riots were a time of unrest in London and other parts of England. After the chapel was lost, Catholics in Hull had to meet in secret places.

Things changed in 1798 when Father Pierre Foucher arrived in Hull. He had fled from France because of the French Revolution, a big change in France's government. Father Foucher was a wealthy man. He used his own money to build a new, small chapel on North Street. He returned to France in 1820.

Father John Smith took over from Father Foucher. He found a new location on Jarratt Street to build a bigger church. The construction of the current church began with architect John Earle. The church officially opened its doors on July 29, 1829. Later, the church was redesigned by another architect, J.J. Scoles.

Over the years, more parts were added to the church, like the side aisles. The beautiful decorations you can see inside the church today were added in 1899. This work was done under the guidance of Canon Sullivan.

The Church Organ

The large musical instrument you see in the church, called an organ, was brought to St Charles' around 1866. It was originally built for another church in Hull, St John's Church, either in 1812 or 1815. Before coming to St Charles', it had also been used at St Wilfrid's in York.

The organ was updated and changed by a company called Messrs Forster and Andrews in 1909. It was improved again in 1959 to keep it working well.

Schools Connected to the Church
