History of the Church
How Old Is It?
This church is really old, dating all the way back to the 13th century! That's over 700 years ago. In 1874, the church was carefully restored by an architect named James Fowler from Louth. This restoration helped keep the old building in good shape.
Early Mentions and Beginnings
Interestingly, the famous Domesday Book from 1086 doesn't mention a church in Clarborough. However, we know a church was definitely around by 1103. At that time, a person named William de Lovetot gave half of its income to the church.
The actual building of the original church started in 1258. Sewal de Bovil, who was the Archbishop of York, made an important decision. He said that the vicar (a type of priest) of Clarborough should receive the altarage (money from the altar offerings). The vicar also got the toft (a piece of land for a house) and croft (a small field) right next to the churchyard. Plus, they received the tithes (a part of the crops or income) from the enclosed fields in the town.
The parish church dedicated to St John the Baptist was officially founded in 1260. This church, along with Manor Farm nearby, became the main center of the village.
The Ancient Yew Tree
In the churchyard, there's a very old yew tree. Some people believe this tree might be over 1,000 years old! Imagine all the history it has seen.
