St John the Evangelist's Church is a church located in Oulton, West Yorkshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church. This means it is a local church that serves the community in its area. It is part of the Church of England, specifically within the Diocese of Leeds.

History of St John's Church

This church was built a long time ago, between 1827 and 1829. It was designed by architects named Rickman and Hutchinson. In 1898, the church was part of the Diocese of Ripon. The person in charge of the church at that time was Reverend A.E. Green Price.

The church is also a special building because it was given a "Grade II* listed" status on June 5, 1964. This means it is a very important historic building that needs to be protected.

What Does St John's Church Look Like?

Outside the Church: Exterior Design

The church was built using a style called "Early English". This is a type of Gothic architecture that was popular in England a long time ago. The church is made from ashlar sandstone, which means the stone blocks are cut very smoothly. It has a roof made of slate.

The church has a tall tower on its west side. This tower has three main sections and a pointed, eight-sided spire at the top. You can also see "flying buttresses" which are supports that stick out from the walls. They help hold up the building. The main part of the church, called the nave, and the entrance porch are on the north side. A smaller, six-sided room called the vestry is on the south side.

Inside the Church: Interior Features

Inside, the church has arches that are pointed at the top. These are called "two-centred arches." The ceiling has a special design called "groin-vaulted," which looks like a series of arches crossing each other. There are also carved decorations called "bosses" on the ceiling.

The church's organ is located at the west end of the building. There is also a special wall monument inside. This monument remembers John Blayds, who helped start the church. He passed away in the same year that construction began.

Damage to the Church: Water Issues

In November 2014, a lot of lead was stolen from the church's roof. This caused a big problem because rain and water could get inside. The water caused a lot of damage, and the church could not be used for a while. People are now trying to raise money to fix the damage and make the church safe to use again.
