Church History
This church is very old, dating back to the 13th century. This means it was first built around the 1200s!
Building Changes Over Time
The Drake family, who lived nearby at Prattshayes, helped make the church bigger. In the 16th century (around the 1500s), they paid for a new section called the North Aisle. This part of the church is still known as Drakes Aisle.
The church had a big makeover between 1883 and 1884. A famous architect named Robert Medley Fulford led this project. During these repairs, some old stained-glass pieces from the 15th century were found. These pieces showed interesting figures like Saint Roch, who was known as the patron saint of people suffering from the plague. They also showed Archangel Michael fighting a serpent and Christ showing his wounds. These old glass pieces were carefully placed into a window in the north aisle. The windows in the south aisle were made by a company called Percy Bacon & Brothers.
Famous People Connected to the Church
The churchyard is the resting place for some notable people. Frances Nelson, who was the wife of the famous British naval hero Lord Nelson, is buried here. Also buried in the churchyard is Admiral of the Fleet Sir Fairfax Moresby. He was a very important naval officer, and the capital city of Papua New Guinea, called Port Moresby, is named after him!
Today, St Margaret and St Andrew's Church works closely with Holy Trinity Church, Exmouth. They are part of the same church community.
The Church Organ
The church has a beautiful organ made by a company called Norman and Beard. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register, which lists information about pipe organs across the country.
