History of St Mary's Church
How the Church Began
The story of St Mary's Church goes back a very long time. It is connected to Edwin of Northumbria, who was a King and a Saint. King Edwin was killed in a battle called the Battle of Hatfield Chase in the year 633. His body was buried in the forest.
Later, his friends came to find him to take him to be buried in York. They found that a small wooden chapel had already been built where he was buried. This wooden chapel was the very beginning of St Mary's Church, which stands today. The village of Edwinstowe even got its name from King Edwin!
Building and Changes Over Time
The church building you see now was first built around the year 1175. This was during the time of King Henry II. The original wooden chapel was rebuilt with stronger materials.
Over the years, the church has been repaired and updated. It was restored in 1869 and again in 1890. These restorations helped keep the old church in good condition.
The Legend of Robin Hood
Many people visit St Mary's Church because of a famous legend. According to local stories, this is the church where the legendary hero Robin Hood and Maid Marian were married! This makes the church a special place for tourists who love the tales of Sherwood Forest.
The Church Organ
Inside St Mary's Church, there is a beautiful organ. This organ was made by a company called Forster and Andrews in 1862. Organs are large musical instruments that make sound using pipes. You can find more details about this specific organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
