St Mary's Church is a special old church located in a small village called Lambourn Woodlands in Berkshire, England. It used to be a regular church for services, but now it's looked after by the Churches Conservation Trust. This trust helps to protect important old churches. St Mary's is also a 'Grade II listed building,' which means it's a historic place that needs to be preserved. You can find it about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the town of Lambourn, right by the B4000 road.
History of St Mary's Church
This church was built a long time ago, in 1852. A talented architect named Thomas Talbot Bury designed it. He was a student of another famous architect, Augustus Charles Pugin. The church was built in a style called Gothic Revival. This style brings back the look of medieval churches.
St Mary's Church stopped being used for regular church services on June 1, 1990. After that, on July 24, 1991, it was officially given to the Churches Conservation Trust. This means the Trust now owns and takes care of the building, making sure it stays safe for future generations.
What St Mary's Church Looks Like
St Mary's Church is built from a type of stone called flint, with other stone pieces used for decoration. Its roofs are made of slate. The church has a simple shape, with a main hall called a nave. It also has a smaller section on the side called a north aisle and a special area at the front called a chancel.
On the north side, near the front, there is a tall, eight-sided tower called an octagonal spire. The church has several windows that let in light. Three of these windows have two sections, and the large window at the very front (the east window) has three sections. These windows are designed in a style known as 'Decorated Gothic.'
Inside the church, you'll see a row of arches called an arcade. These arches are supported by eight-sided pillars, which are called piers. In the chancel area, there are special seats called a sedilia and a basin for water called a piscina. The beautiful decorated screen behind the altar, known as the reredos, was carved by a sculptor named John Bacon. Interestingly, his son was the very first priest to serve in this church.
