History of St Mary's Church
The church building has a long history. It was first built way back in the 14th century. Over the years, parts of it have been updated.
Early Renovations
In 1802, the church underwent some restoration work. Later, in 1819, the main part of the church, called the nave, and the area around the altar, known as the chancel, were built.
A Vicar's Challenges
In the late 1800s, the church's vicar, Reverend John Vallancy, faced some unusual situations. In 1892, he took two church members to court. He said they were causing disruptions during services. However, the court decided against him.
Two years later, in 1894, he was in court again. This time, he had a disagreement with a parishioner. He did not like her habit of placing flowers on her sister's grave. The court ruled against the vicar, and he had to pay her legal costs.
In 1896, the vicar was found guilty of making threats towards a visitor. Because of these events, he had to appear before a special church court in 1897. The Bishop of Southwell suspended him from his duties for 18 months.
