This church is very old! It was first built around the time of the Normans, which was over 900 years ago. Over the centuries, new parts were added to the church. For a long time, it was known as St Leonard's Church. But in the 1300s, its name was changed to St Mary's, as she was a more popular saint.

In the 1800s, a part of the church called the chancel collapsed. Because of this, a big repair and update project happened in 1886. This work was led by an architect named W. S. Weatherley.
