You can find the church on the south side of the B4000 road, about 3 kilometers south of Lambourn.

History of St Mary's Church

St Mary's Church was built in 1852. It was designed by an architect named Thomas Talbot Bury. He built it in a style called Gothic Revival. This style was popular at the time and looked like old medieval churches.

The church stopped being used for regular services on June 1, 1990. On July 24, 1991, it was officially given to the Churches Conservation Trust. This group now takes care of the building to make sure it is preserved.

What Does St Mary's Church Look Like?

St Mary's Church is built using flint stones, with special stone pieces (called dressings) around the windows and doors. Its roofs are made of slate.

The church has a simple layout. It includes a main hall called a nave with three sections. There is also a north aisle, which is a side passage, and a chancel, which is the area near the altar. At the north side of the front of the church, there is an eight-sided spire that points upwards.

The church has three windows with two lights (sections) each. These are in a style called Decorated Gothic, which means they have fancy patterns. There is also a larger window at the east end with three lights.

Inside the church, there is an arcade. This is a row of arches supported by eight-sided pillars (called piers). In the chancel, you can find a sedilia, which is a set of seats for the clergy, and a piscina, which is a basin for washing sacred vessels. The decorative screen behind the altar, called the reredos, was carved by John Bacon. His son was actually the first priest of this church.
