St Mary and St Peter's Church is an active Anglican church in the village of Barham. This village is close to Ipswich. The church is special because it holds a famous statue by Henry Moore. This statue, called "Madonna and Child," was first kept at St Peter's Church in Claydon. St Mary and St Peter's Church is part of the local church group in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

History of St Mary and St Peter's Church

A church in Barham was first written about in the Domesday Book. This was a very old survey of England made in 1086. The church tower has special building features. These features, called "long-and-short work," show it might be from the Saxon times. This means it could be over 1,000 years old!

The church was known as St Mary's from at least 1538. In 1975, the church area grew to include the village of Claydon. When St Peter's Church in Claydon was no longer used, St Mary's was renamed St Mary and St Peter's.

Special Art and Memorials

The most famous artwork in the church is the Henry Moore statue. It is called "Madonna and Child." This statue was originally at St Peter's Church in Claydon. It was made as a special memorial for people from the village. These were people who died in the Second World War. When St Peter's Church closed, the statue was moved to St Mary and St Peter's.

Other old memorials and metal plaques used to be in the church. However, they were removed or damaged over many years.

What Happens at the Church Today?

St Mary and St Peter's Church is a very important building. It was given a special Grade I listing on December 9, 1955. This means it is a building of great historical interest.

The church holds different services for people to attend.

  • Every Sunday morning at 8 am, there is a communion service. This uses the Book of Common Worship. This service does not happen on the fifth Sunday of a month.
  • On the first Sunday of each month, a shorter communion service is held at 10 am.
  • On the second and fourth Sundays, a full communion service is held at 10 am.
  • On the third Sunday of each month, a community worship service takes place at 10 am. This service is for everyone. It welcomes families with children, adults, and those new to church. Local groups often help run these services.

If a month has a fifth Sunday, a special family communion service is held. This service moves between three local churches. St Mary and St Peter's hosts it one out of every three times. The other times it is held at St Mary's Church, Great Blakenham or St Peter's Church, Henley.

Famous People Connected to the Church

  • William Kirby (1782–1850) was a priest here. He was also a famous scientist who studied insects. This is called an entomologist.
