History of the Church
The idea for St Matthew's Church came from Reverend Frederick Squibb in 1906. He wanted a new church to replace the much older one from the 1600s, called Old St Matthew's Church, Stalling Busk.
Building work on the new church began in 1908. It was officially opened for worship in October 1909. The church was designed by an architect named Thomas Gerard Davidson. He built it in a style called Arts and Crafts, which focuses on simple designs and natural materials.
