History of Hardraw Church
Building the Church
This church was built between 1879 and 1880. It was designed by a well-known architect named Richard Herbert Carpenter. He was famous for creating beautiful and important buildings.
A Special Memorial
The church was paid for by Edward Montagu-Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Wharncliffe. He wanted the church to be a special way to remember his brother, James Frederick Stuart-Wortley. It cost about £3,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then!
Official Opening
The church was officially opened and blessed on July 20, 1880. This ceremony was led by the Bishop of Ripon, Robert Bickersteth. This event made the church ready for people to use for worship.
Featured on TV
St Mary and St John's Church became quite famous when it appeared on television. It was shown as "Darrowby Church" in the popular British TV series All Creatures Great and Small.
