The Church's Story: A Look Back

This beautiful church was built between 1879 and 1880. It was designed by a talented architect named Richard Herbert Carpenter. The money for building the church came from a wealthy person named Edward Montagu-Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Wharncliffe. He wanted to build it as a special way to remember his brother, the Hon. James Frederick Stuart-Wortley.

The church was officially opened and blessed on July 20, 1880. This ceremony was led by the Bishop of Ripon, Rt. Revd. Robert Bickersteth.

Many people might recognize this church from television! It was featured as "Darrowby Church" in the popular British TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

Inside the church, there is a pipe organ. This special musical instrument was built by the Vincent Electric Organ company. Before coming to St Mary and St John's, it was originally located in West Witton Methodist Church. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
