Building St Matthias' Church
Who Helped Build It?
The money to build St Matthias' Church came from important people. A banker named John Smith helped pay for the main church building. The tall spire, which is the pointy top part of the church, was paid for by William Beckett, who was a Member of Parliament.
The church was designed by a company from Leeds called Perkins & Backhouse. They also designed another church nearby, St Peter's Bramley. Building work started in 1853. A builder from Headingley named Thomas Moxon led the construction.
Crafting the Details
Many skilled workers helped create the church's beautiful details. The wooden parts and carvings inside the church were made by Messrs Winn and Pawson. The font, which is a basin used for baptisms, along with special tablets and other stone carvings, were all made by Robert Mawer.
Making Room for More People
By 1886, the area around the church, Burley, had grown a lot. This was because of the Industrial Revolution, which brought many new jobs and people to cities. More land was sold for building homes. To make space for the growing number of people who wanted to attend church, St Matthias' was made bigger. Its capacity increased from 450 people to 650 people.

Church Life and Traditions
St Matthias' Church follows a specific Christian tradition within the Church of England called the Charismatic tradition. This means they often focus on spiritual gifts and lively worship.
In the summer of 2018, St Matthias' Church joined together with another church called Riverside Church. This created a larger church community.
The Church Bells
The church has a group of bell-ringers who are part of the Leeds University Union Society of Change Ringers. They ring the church's eight bells. These bells are hung for "full circle ringing," which is a special way of ringing them. The current set of eight bells replaced an older set of six bells. The original three bells were made in 1854, and then three more were added in 1855, making a set of six.
