A Look at the Church Building

St Nicholas' Church sits on a hill. From here, you can see the River Wylye flowing nearby. The church has a unique look because it's built with a checkerboard pattern. This pattern uses alternating blocks of dark flint stone and lighter stone.

The church was built in the 14th century. It stands on the spot where an even older Norman church once stood. In the 1800s, the church was rebuilt quite a bit. John Davis helped organize this work, which included rebuilding the chancel (the area around the altar). The church also has a two-part tower. This tower is supported by strong diagonal buttresses, which are like extra supports on the outside walls.

Inside the Church

Inside St Nicholas' Church, you can find several interesting features.

  • There is a beautiful Minton tiled reredos. A reredos is a decorated screen or wall covering behind the altar. This one might be from the 1861 rebuilding.
  • The church also has a screen that was designed by Frederick Charles Eden. It was put in place in 1912.
  • The font, which is used for baptisms, is very old. It is shaped like a cylinder and dates all the way back to the 12th century.
  • The church used to have more bells. One bell was moved to Wylye church in 1975. Of the four bells left, two were made in 1745 by James Burrough. The other two were made in 1844 by Mears.

The Churchyard

The churchyard is the area around the church where people are buried. A famous artist named William Herbert Allen (1863–1943) is buried here. He was a landscape watercolour artist. He painted for over 50 years, from the 1880s to the 1940s.

Church History and Parish Changes

Over the years, the way the church parish was managed changed. In 1929, St Nicholas' Church was joined with the church in Wylye. This meant they shared some resources, but the parishes were still separate places. Later, other nearby parishes like Stockton and The Langfords (Steeple Langford and Little Langford) also became part of this group. In 1974, the parishes of Wylye and Fisherton Delamere officially became one united parish.
