Memorials Inside the Church

Inside St Peter's Church, you can find special memorials. These are like tributes to remember important people. One notable memorial is for George Brettle, created in 1835 by the famous sculptor Sir Richard Westmacott.

The Church Organ

The church has a large musical instrument called an organ. The very first organ in St Peter's Church was quite old, dating back to around 1754. It was moved here from an older chapel called St John.

Later, in 1853, a brand new organ was installed by William Holt of Bradford. This new organ cost 300 guineas, which was a lot of money back then! It was first played on December 22, 1853.

Over the years, the organ has been updated. In 1873, it was rebuilt by Radcliffe & Sagar, making it bigger with three keyboards and pedals. J.H. Adkins of Derby worked on it again in 1902, making some changes to its sound. More work was done by Edmund Stow in 1978/79. You can find detailed information about the current organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.
