St Peter's Church is a historic parish church located in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. It is the second-oldest church of its kind in the town. The church stands in St Peter's Square and is recognized as a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected. St Peter's is an active Anglican church, part of the diocese of Chester.

History of St Peter's Church

St Peter's Church was built in 1768. A man named William Wright paid for the entire building himself. Later, in 1838, a gallery was added inside the church. An apse, which is a rounded part of the church, was added between 1888 and 1889.

What Happens at St Peter's Today?

St Peter's is an Anglican church that follows a special tradition called the Oxford Movement. This tradition became popular in the 1800s. Today, the church holds a sung mass with Angelus every Sunday at 10:30 AM. There is also a quiet mass on Fridays at 12:30 PM.

The church is a Forward in Faith parish. This means it has a special connection to Glyn Webster, who is the Bishop of Beverley.

Visiting St Peter's Church

Located in the heart of Stockport, St Peter's Church offers a peaceful place for people to visit. It is open to the public, along with its café and shop, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 AM to 2 PM. On the second Saturday of each month, you can enjoy a coffee morning and an organ recital from 10 AM to 1 PM.

Architecture and Design

St Peter's Church is built using brick. It has a tower on the west side, a main hall called a nave, and a chancel where the altar is.

Church Structure Details

The church tower has three levels. The main entrance is on the west side, with a round-headed window above it. The very top part of the tower, which holds the bells, is shaped like an octagon. The windows in the nave are also round-headed.

Inside the Church: Fittings and Furniture

The inside of St Peter's Church feels bright and spacious. At the west end, there is a gallery. The front of the church has special panels decorated with a colorful shield. This shield shows the cross keys, which are a symbol of St Peter.

Under the gallery, there is a white marble font. On the north wall of the chancel, you can see three marble tablets. These tablets remember William Wright, who founded the church, and two of its early vicars. There is also an old hatchment from the 1700s or early 1800s, which belonged to a member of the Wright family.

The church has one bell, which was made in 1768. The communion plate, used for services, includes a chalice (a cup) and a paten (a small plate), both from 1768.

The Historic Church Clock

Inside the church's nave, you will find a very old clock frame from 1769. This clock used to be in the bell tower. It has been carefully repaired and now works again. It is believed to be the oldest working public clock in Greater Manchester. John Whitehurst (1713–1788) from Derby made the clock, and it was installed shortly after the church opened in 1769.

Special Church Clothes

St Peter's Church also has a beautiful set of special clothes, called clerical vestments, used for important services. These date back to about 1890 and are said to be made from Portuguese tapestry. The set includes a tunical, a chasuble, and a dalmatic.
