St Peter's Church is a very old church in Stockport, England. It's one of the oldest churches there! You can find it in St Peter's Square. It's so special that it's officially protected as a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical place. History of St Peter's Church
The church was built in 1768. A man named William Wright paid for the whole building himself. Later, in 1838, a gallery was added inside the church. An apse, which is a rounded part of the church, was built between 1888 and 1889.
Church Life and Activities
St Peter's is an Anglican church that follows a special tradition. This tradition is called the Oxford Movement. It became popular in the 1800s. Today, the church still holds sung mass services on Sundays at 10:30 AM. They also have a quiet mass on Fridays at 12:30 PM.
The church is in the middle of Stockport. It offers a peaceful place for people to visit. You can also find a café and a shop inside. These are open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11 AM to 2 PM. On the second Saturday of every month, the church hosts a coffee morning. There is also an organ recital from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Architecture and Design
Church Structure
St Peter's Church is built with bricks. It has a tower at the west end. The church also has a main hall, called a nave, and a special area near the altar, called a chancel. The tower has three parts. The top part, where the bells are, is shaped like an octagon. The windows in the main hall are rounded at the top.
Inside the Church: Fittings and Furniture
The inside of St Peter's Church is bright and feels very open. There is a gallery at the west end. The front part of the church has special wooden panels. These panels show a colourful shield with the cross keys of Saint Peter. Under the gallery, you can see a white marble baptismal font. This is where baptisms take place.
On the north wall of the chancel, there are three marble tablets. These tablets remember William Wright, who founded the church. They also remember two of the church's early vicars. You can also see a special painting called a funerary hatchment. This painting is from the 1700s or early 1800s. It remembers someone from the Wright family.
The church has one bell that was made in 1768. The communion plate, which includes a chalice (a cup) and a paten (a small plate), also dates back to 1768.
The Oldest Public Clock
In the church's nave, there is a very old clock. It was made in 1769 by John Whitehurst of Derby. This clock used to be in the bell tower. Now, it has been fixed and works again! Many people believe it is the oldest working public clock in Greater Manchester.
Special Church Clothes
The church also has a beautiful set of special clothes. These are called clerical vestments. They are used for important services. They were made around 1890 and are said to be from Portuguese tapestry. The set includes a tunical, a chasuble, and a dalmatic.
