St Wilfrid’s Church in Barrow upon Trent is a very old and important church. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it's a special historical place. It belongs to the Church of England and is located in the village of Barrow upon Trent, Derbyshire, in England.
A Look Back in Time
This church is incredibly old! It was built even before the Norman Conquest of 1066, during the Anglo-Saxon period. Imagine, people were worshipping here over a thousand years ago!
In 1165, the church was given to a group called the Knights Hospitaller. They were a famous Christian order who helped pilgrims and the sick. They worked on and improved the church building until about 1540.
Inside the church, you can see a special stone carving called an alabaster effigy. It's a statue of a priest, and many people believe it shows John de Belton. This effigy is thought to be the oldest alabaster statue of a priest in all of England!
The church and the village of Barrow upon Trent are even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror in 1085. It helps us learn about what England was like long ago.
In the churchyard, you can find the grave of Anne Mozley. She was an important editor of Anglican papers for Cardinal (St) John Newman.
