A Look at the Church's History
This church has been around for a very long time! Parts of it, like the chancel (the area around the altar), were built in the 12th century. That's over 800 years ago! The main part of the church dates back to the 13th century. Some windows in the north side were added in the 14th century.
Many interesting things inside the church are from the 17th century. For example, there is a special pulpit (where the priest gives sermons) from 1611. You can also see a large and unusual monument to a person named Richard Sale, which was made in 1615.
Other old items include a parish bier (a frame for carrying coffins) from 1653. There is also a large chest from 1662. These items show how long the church has been used by the community.
Restoring the Church
The church was given a big makeover between 1876 and 1877. Two architects, Jolley and Evans from Nottingham, led the work. During this time, old plaster was removed from the walls. The floor in the chancel was updated with special patterned tiles. New wooden seats were also put in for everyone. The church was ready and reopened on July 30, 1877.
The Church Organ
St Mary's Church has a beautiful pipe organ. It was built by Joseph Walker in 1816. This organ was not always in Weston-on-Trent. It used to be in All Saints’ Church in Aston-on-Trent. In 1974, a person named H Cantrill moved the organ to St Mary's. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
