Discovering Staatsburg's Past

Staatsburg has a long history. It was once part of a large land grant called the Pawling-Staats land patent. The English government gave out these patents in the 1690s. They wanted more people to move to the Hudson Valley, which was not very populated then.

How Staatsburg Got Its Name

The original land grant went to Henry Pawling. Later, a big part of this land was bought by Dr. Samuel Staats. He was a surgeon from New York City with Dutch roots. He and Dirck Vanderburgh bought the land for 130 pounds from Pawling's widow. Because of their names, the area became known as "Staatsburgh." The "h" at the end of the name was removed in 1890. This was part of an effort by the United States Board on Geographic Names to make names standard.
