Exploring Staden's Geography
Staden is a municipality made up of several villages. In 1976, Staden joined with two smaller villages, Oostnieuwkerke and Westrozebeke. Since Staden was the largest village, the whole new area kept its name.
Villages and Hamlets in Staden
Besides the three main village centers, Staden also has smaller areas called hamlets.
- Vijfwegen is a hamlet found where Staden, Westrozebeke, and Poelkapelle meet.
- Sleihage is another hamlet located between Oostnieuwkerke and Hooglede.
Both Vijfwegen and Sleihage used to have their own churches and local communities. Other people in the municipality live in even smaller hamlets.

A Look at Staden's History
The village of Staden began around the year 1100. It grew up near the old Staden Castle. This castle was built in the forests, close to the road that connected the cities of Ypres and Bruges.
The Old Staden Castle
The Staden Castle was mostly controlled by Ypres, but Bruges also had some power over it. Sadly, the castle was completely destroyed in 1917 during the First World War. Today, only a part of the castle's old moat remains. You can also find a bench made from the stones of the ruined castle.
