Stafford is a small community in Clackamas County, Oregon, in the United States. It's known as a hamlet, which is a type of small village that is not officially a city. It is also a "census-designated place" (CDP), meaning the government counts its population separately.
In 2020, about 1,895 people lived in Stafford. The community covers an area of about 16.39 square kilometers (about 6.3 square miles). It is located in a triangle shape. This area is south of Lake Oswego, east of Tualatin, and west of West Linn. Students living in Stafford go to schools in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District.
A Look at Stafford's Past
Stafford got its name from George A. Steel. He was an important early settler in Portland. In the 1860s, he named the area after his hometown, Stafford, Ohio.
Early Developments
The first school in the community, called Stafford School, opened in 1892. The next year, an electric railway owned by George A. Steel reached the area. This made travel and trade easier for the people living there.
In 1895, the Wanker family moved to Stafford. They bought land and built a store and a tavern. This area later became known as Wankers Corner.
Community Growth and Decisions
In 1995, there was a plan to add parts of Stafford to Portland's "urban growth boundary." This boundary helps control how cities grow. About 830 acres (3.4 square kilometers) were added. However, after a legal challenge, these acres were removed in 2001. This decision was made by the Oregon Court of Appeals.
In November 2006, the people of Stafford voted to officially form a hamlet. A hamlet is a small community that has some local control but is not a full city. Stafford was the second community in Oregon to do this. The first was Beavercreek.
