Stamps is a small city in Lafayette County, Arkansas, United States. In 2020, about 1,258 people lived there. This was fewer than the 1,693 people counted in 2010.

History of Stamps

A post office opened in Stamps way back in 1887. The city got its name from a local family called Stamps.

For a while, Stamps was an important place for the Louisiana and Arkansas Railway. It was where their main shops were located. But in the early 1920s, these shops moved to Minden in northern Louisiana.

Stamps is known for having a funny or unusual name. An early postmaster once joked that Stamps was "the only town in the U.S. that stamps Stamps on stamps."

Where is Stamps Located?

Stamps is in the northeastern part of Lafayette County, in southwestern Arkansas.

U.S. Route 82 goes through the northern side of the city. If you go west on this road for about 5 miles, you'll reach Lewisville. Lewisville is the main town, or county seat, of Lafayette County. If you go east on Route 82 for about 3 miles, you'll get to Buckner.

Arkansas Highway 53 starts in Stamps at U.S. Route 82. It goes south through the middle of Stamps for about 27 miles. It ends near the state line close to Springhill, Louisiana.

The city of Stamps covers a total area of about 8.1 square kilometers (3.15 square miles). Most of this area, about 7.9 square kilometers (3.05 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square kilometers (0.10 square miles), is water. There's a lake called Lake June in the southern part of the city.

Education in Stamps

Students in Stamps go to public schools run by the Lafayette County School District. This district includes Lafayette County Elementary School and Lafayette County High School. The school's mascot is the Cougar.

Before 2003, Stamps had its own school district. But on July 1, 2003, the Stamps School District joined with the Lewisville School District. This created the Lafayette County district we know today.

Famous People from Stamps

Many interesting people have connections to Stamps:

  • Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was a famous author and poet. She wrote about growing up in the Black community of Stamps in her book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
  • Black Ivory King (1899–1947) was a blues and boogie-woogie piano player. He was known for his song "The Flying Crow."
  • George Doherty (1920–1987) was a math and physical education teacher in Stamps. He was also a football player and a very inspiring coach.
  • Danny Ormand used to be the Fire Chief in Stamps. He also worked for the state of Arkansas.
  • Earl T. Ricks (1908–1954) grew up in Stamps. He became a major general in the United States Air Force.
  • Rolling Thunder (1916–1997) was born in Stamps. He was known as a "hippie medicine man."
