Stan Goldberg (born May 5, 1932 – died August 31, 2014) was a talented American comic book artist. He was famous for his amazing work with Archie Comics. He also worked as a colorist for Marvel Comics in the 1960s. He helped create the original colors for popular characters like Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. In 2011, he was honored by being added to the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame.

Early Life of Stan Goldberg

Stan Goldberg was born in The Bronx, New York City, on May 5, 1932. He went to high school at the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan.

Stan Goldberg's Comic Book Career

Stan Goldberg started working in comics in 1949 when he was about 17 years old. He began as a colorist for Timely Comics, which later became Marvel Comics. A colorist is an artist who adds colors to comic book pages. Two years later, Stan became the manager of the coloring department. He said he colored almost every comic book cover for Atlas Comics during that time. While working, he also took evening classes at the School of Visual Arts.

The Silver Age of Comics

In 1958, Goldberg decided to work as a freelance artist. This means he worked for different companies on a project-by-project basis. He also went back to the School of Visual Arts to study how to draw storyboards for TV. As Atlas Comics changed into Marvel, Stan continued to color their comic books. He worked with famous artists like Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Together, they created the color designs for characters such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the Hulk. This time is known as the Silver Age of comic books.

Goldberg remembered that Stan Lee, Marvel's editor-in-chief, was writing many popular comics. Stan Goldberg was the one who did the first coloring for all those books. He created the color schemes for all those well-known characters.

Besides coloring, Goldberg also worked as a penciler and inker. A penciler draws the first sketches, and an inker traces over them with ink. He became well-known for drawing humor comics for Marvel. These comics often starred teenagers and young women. He worked on titles like Kathy the Teenage Tornado and the long-running Millie the Model. He also drew for romantic comedy series like Patsy Walker.

Working with Archie Comics

Goldberg stopped working freelance for Marvel in 1969. For three years, he drew teen comics for DC Comics, including Date with Debbi and Swing with Scooter. Soon after, he began a very long time working with Archie Comics. He joined other artists like Dan DeCarlo to draw the adventures of Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and their friends.

Goldberg's art appeared in many Archie comics. He was the main artist for the main Archie series from the mid-1990s to mid-2006. His work also appeared in comics like Archie and Me, Betty, Life with Archie, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

He even drew the Archie Sunday newspaper comic strip for a while starting in 1975. In 1994, Goldberg was chosen to draw the Archie Comics part of a special crossover comic. This comic was called Archie Meets the Punisher. In it, the serious Marvel hero, the Punisher, chases someone who looks like Archie into Riverdale.

Stan Goldberg finished his nearly 40-year relationship with Archie Comics with two special stories. These were "Archie Marries Veronica" and "Archie Marries Betty." They showed what might happen in the future. He also drew for children's graphic novels like Nancy Drew and The Three Stooges for the publisher Papercutz.

In 2010, a book called Archie: The Best of Stan Goldberg was released. It was a collection of his best Archie work.

Awards and Recognition

Goldberg received an Inkpot Award in 1994 at Comic-Con International. In 2003, he was the focus of a special panel at the convention called "Spotlight on Stan Goldberg."

In 2011, Goldberg was inducted into the National Cartoonists Society Hall of Fame. He received the organization's Gold Key Award on May 26, 2012.
