Stanley Herbert Johnson Jr. (born May 29, 1996) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for the South Bay Lakers in the NBA G League. Before becoming a pro, he played one season of college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. He was picked eighth overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2015 NBA draft. Stanley has also played for several other NBA teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, and San Antonio Spurs.

High School Basketball Star
Stanley Johnson grew up in Fullerton, California. He was one of the best high school basketball players in the country in 2014. He won four state championships with Mater Dei High School. Stanley also played in famous games like the 2014 McDonald's All-American Boys Game. He scored 2,285 points during his high school career. This is the third-highest score in Mater Dei's history.
College Career at Arizona
In 2014, Stanley joined the Arizona Wildcats for college. Even as a freshman, he was a top player. He was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. He also made the first-team All-Pac-12 list. Stanley started in 37 out of 38 games for the Wildcats. He averaged 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. After just one year, Stanley decided to enter the NBA draft. He was ranked as one of the top prospects.
Professional Basketball Journey
Starting with the Detroit Pistons
On June 25, 2015, the Detroit Pistons chose Stanley as the eighth overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. In his first game, he scored seven points. On November 9, he scored 20 points against the Golden State Warriors. Later, on February 4, 2016, he scored a season-high 22 points against the New York Knicks. Stanley also spent some time playing for the Grand Rapids Drive in the NBA Development League. On January 30, 2018, he scored a career-high 26 points in a game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Moving to New Orleans and Toronto
In February 2019, Stanley was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. He played there for a short time. Then, in July 2019, he signed with the Toronto Raptors. On August 12, 2020, Stanley made his first game-winning shot against the Philadelphia 76ers. He scored a season-high 23 points on August 14, 2020. The Raptors made it to the second round of the 2020 NBA Playoffs. This was the first time Stanley reached the second round in his career. On May 13, 2021, he scored a career-high 35 points against the Chicago Bulls.
Playing for the Lakers and Spurs
In November 2021, Stanley joined the South Bay Lakers. He played six games there. On December 24, 2021, he signed a contract with his hometown team, the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed a two-year contract with them in January 2022. In August 2022, Stanley was traded to the Utah Jazz. He later signed with the Sioux Falls Skyforce in December 2022. Soon after, he joined the San Antonio Spurs. He was with the Spurs until February 2023.
Recent Teams: Stockton and Anadolu Efes
In December 2023, Stanley was acquired by the Stockton Kings. In July 2024, he signed with Anadolu Efes, a team in Turkey. He played in the EuroLeague with them. In February 2025, Stanley left the team to return to the United States for family reasons. He then rejoined the NBA G League.

Stanley Johnson was born in Anaheim, California. His mother, Karen Taylor, played college basketball and professionally in Europe. She was even inducted into her college's Sports Hall of Fame. Stanley was raised by his mother in Fullerton. He is a Christian and has two brothers and two sisters.
