State Farm is the biggest company in the U.S. for car insurance and other types of insurance, like home insurance. It is also one of the largest companies in America. In 2024, it ranked 39th on the Fortune 500 list, which ranks companies by how much money they make.

State Farm uses special agents to sell its insurance. These agents only sell State Farm products.

Banking and Investing

State Farm also offers financial services like banking and mutual funds. Their bank opened in 1999. It is run by a part of State Farm called State Farm Financial Services, FSB.

State Farm Bank does not have physical branches. You can do your banking online, over the phone, or through a State Farm agent. They offer checking and savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and money market accounts. You can also get home mortgages through them.

History of State Farm

State Farm was started in June 1922 by a retired farmer named George J. Mecherle. It began as a company that helped farmers get car insurance. Farmers could get better rates than people in cities.

Over time, State Farm grew. It started offering other types of insurance, like homeowners and life insurance. Later, it added banking and financial services.

As of 2017, State Farm had 70,000 employees and 19,000 agents. In February 2014, the company managed 80 million insurance policies in the United States and Canada. This included over 44 million car policies and 27 million home policies.

Michael L. Tipsord was the chairman and CEO of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company. The company announced in December 2023 that Jon Farney would take over as president and CEO in 2024. Jon Farney is the current president and chief executive officer.

By 2017, State Farm planned to close 11 offices in the U.S. to make its operations better. In 2014, it sold its business in Canada to a company called Desjardins Group. Desjardins Group continued to use the State Farm name in Canada until 2018. By 2019, State Farm Canada was fully rebranded as Desjardins Insurance.

In May 2023, State Farm announced it would stop selling new home insurance policies in California. This was because of wildfire risks and high building costs. In February 2025, State Farm asked California regulators to approve a 22% increase in home insurance rates. This was due to the costs from the January 2025 Southern California wildfires.

The State Farm tri-oval logo used from 1953 to 2011

The famous State Farm red tri-oval logo was created in the 1940s and updated in 1953. This design showed three interlocking ovals. They stood for the company's main types of insurance: auto, life, and fire. This logo was a very important part of the company's image for almost 60 years.

On December 15, 2011, State Farm changed its logo. The new logo was introduced on January 1, 2012, to celebrate the company's 90th anniversary. It has a simpler three-oval design without words inside the ovals. The company wanted a bolder look for the digital world.

TV Commercials

In June 2011, State Farm started its "Get to a Better State" ad campaign. These ads often show funny situations where something goes wrong. Then, they show how easy it is to call a State Farm agent to fix the problem.

In these ads, someone in trouble sings the jingle, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there." Then, a State Farm agent appears as if by magic to help.

One very popular commercial was "State of Unrest." It showed a man talking on the phone at 3 AM. His wife thought he was talking to someone secretly. She asked who it was, and he said, "It's Jake from State Farm." The original Jake was played by Jake Stone, a real State Farm employee.

In 2020, Kevin Miles took over the role of Jake from State Farm. He appeared in many commercials with celebrities like Chris Paul and Paul Rudd. Jake from State Farm, who wears a red shirt and khakis, became very well-known.

In 2024, State Farm's Super Bowl ad, "Like a Good Neighbaaa," was chosen as the top ad by USA Today's Ad Meter. It featured Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito along with Jake from State Farm.

For example, this service is available on Florida's Turnpike and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. In Ohio, State Farm safety patrol vans help on major highways in cities like Cincinnati and Cleveland.
