The State President of the South African Republic was the main leader of the South African Republic. This country was also known as the Transvaal Republic by the British. The President was in charge of the government and had a lot of power.
According to the country's rules from 1871, the President was chosen for five years. They could be chosen again after that. To become President, a person had to be a "Burgher" (a citizen with voting rights). They also had to be over 30 years old and a member of a Protestant church.
