What is Staten Island?
Staten Island is a large piece of land surrounded by water. It covers about 3,700 hectares (9,100 acres). The island is bordered by two parts of the Mokelumne River. The South Mokelumne River is to its east and south. The North Mokelumne River runs along its west and north sides.
Who Manages the Island?
The island is managed by a group called Reclamation District 38. A reclamation district is like a special local government. Its main job is to manage water and land in an area. They often build and maintain levees. Levees are walls built to prevent flooding. This helps protect the farmland on the island.
Why is the Delta Important?
The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is a very important area. It is where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meet. This delta provides water for much of California. It is also home to many different plants and animals. Islands like Staten Island are a key part of this unique environment.
