History of the Oglesby Statue

Richard J. Oglesby was an American leader who served in the military and in politics. He was a commander in the Union Army during the American Civil War, which was a big war in the United States. He also served many times as the Governor of Illinois in the late 1800s. A governor is the leader of a state. Oglesby passed away in 1899.

By December 1916, the artist Leonard Crunelle was chosen to create a statue to remember Oglesby. The cost for the statue was $25,000, which was approved by the government of Illinois. The statue was made of bronze and placed on a granite base. It was officially shown to the public in 1919 in Lincoln Park.

Over the years, the statue faced some damage, including from paint. Around 1990, the granite base was covered with a special coating. This was meant to protect it, but it accidentally made the base more likely to get water damage. In November 1991, the Chicago Tribune newspaper wrote about the statue. The article talked about how some public art in Chicago needed care. It also interviewed Andrzej Dajnowski, who was the first person hired to fix and care for sculptures in the Chicago Park District. He spoke about the plans to repair the Oglesby statue.
