Steamboat is a small, unincorporated community located in Jackson County, Oregon, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes or businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
This community is found along Carberry Creek, which flows into the Applegate River. It's also nestled within the beautiful Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest. Just a short distance to the west is the border between Jackson and Josephine counties. The border with California is only about 6 miles (10 km) to the south.
How Steamboat Got Its Name
The name Steamboat has an interesting origin. It comes from a term used by miners, "steamboated." This word meant that a mining area had been completely worked out, or that it didn't produce as much gold or other minerals as people had hoped.
There's even a place called Steamboat Mine located a little northeast of the community. This suggests the area was once important for mining. The community of Steamboat also had its own post office, which was open from 1888 until 1915.
Other Places Named Steamboat
It might surprise you, but Steamboat isn't the only place in Oregon with this unique name! There's also Steamboat Mountain nearby.
Another well-known spot is Steamboat Creek, which flows through the Calapooya Mountains. This creek is connected to another unincorporated community also called Steamboat, but this one is in Douglas County.
