Steamboat Rock was officially started in 1855. It got its unique name from a big rock found on a nearby river bluff. People thought this rock looked like a line of steamboats from far away!

Steamboat Rock is located at 42°24′27″N 93°3′59″W / 42.40750°N 93.06639°W / 42.40750; -93.06639. The city covers a total area of about 0.55 square miles (1.40 square kilometers), and all of it is land.

The city sits right on the Iowa River. This part of the river flows through a deep gorge made of sandstone. This area was once covered in forests, which is different from most of Iowa, where open grasslands called prairies were common.

Steamboat Rock's Economy

Steamboat Rock is important for producing corn, especially for making ethanol fuel. Ethanol is a type of fuel made from corn. The city was even featured on the TV show 60 Minutes in 2006 because of its ethanol production.

A railroad line through the town, called the Iowa River Railroad, was reopened in 2007. This train line mainly helps the ethanol industry by transporting goods.

Education in Steamboat Rock

Public schools in the area are managed by the AGWSR Community School District. This school district was formed in 2001 when two smaller districts, Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock and Ackley–Geneva, joined together. The Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock district itself was created in 1992 by combining the Steamboat Rock and Wellsburg school districts.
