Stedman Pearson's Music Journey
Stedman was the oldest of five siblings. Before becoming a singer, he studied dance and fashion. In 1983, when he was 19, Stedman joined his younger brother and sisters to form Five Star. Their father, Buster Pearson, who was also a musician, created and managed the group.
Joining Five Star
Stedman sang backing vocals for Five Star. His love for dance and fashion was very important to the group. He even helped design some of their stage outfits. These sparkling costumes and their amazing dance moves made people compare them to The Jackson Five.
Success and Style
Five Star became very successful in the mid-1980s. Their second album, Silk & Steel, reached number one in the UK. It sold over 1.2 million copies. By the end of the 1980s, they had many hit songs. They had fifteen songs in the UK Top 40. They also had four albums in the Top 20, with three of them selling enough to be called Platinum.
In 1987, Stedman joined his siblings on stage at the Brit Awards. They won the award for "Best Group." However, their popularity started to fade in the 1990s, even though they kept making music.
Later Years with the Group
In the late 1980s, the Pearson family moved from their large home in Berkshire. They first moved to Hatfield. Then they moved to the United States. They hoped to make their music career successful again. But they did not find more success in the 1990s.
By 2001, Five Star became a trio. Only Stedman, Denise, and Lorraine Pearson remained. This version of the group performed on the Here and Now Tour in 2002. They played alongside other pop acts from the 1980s. Stedman continued to perform as Five Star with his sister Denise and three backing dancers until 2008. They even performed at Butlins Holiday Camps in the UK.
Stedman was not the main songwriter for the group. However, he did help write some songs. He got writing credit for "Pure Energy" (1986) and "Stone Court" (1987). "Stone Court" was an instrumental song named after their family home. He also co-wrote the song "Feelings" with his sister Doris. This song was on the group's 1990 self-titled album.
Beyond Five Star
After his time with Five Star, Stedman Pearson explored other interests. For a while, he ran a car rental service for fancy cars. He also taught dance at a school in London.
New Adventures
In September 2006, Stedman showed off his dance skills on TV. He appeared as a contestant on the UK Channel 5 show The All Star Talent Show. He finished in third place. In 2007, Stedman announced he was working on his first solo album. This album has not been released yet.
In 2008, Stedman was a contestant on the BBC reality show Celebrity Scissorhands. On this show, celebrities learned to be hairdressers. They did this to raise money for Children In Need, a charity for children. In September 2009, Stedman started teaching a weekly 'jazz dance' class. He taught at the Derngate Gym in Northampton.
