Stefan Charles (born June 9, 1988) is a Canadian former professional football player. He played as a defensive tackle in both the National Football League (NFL) and the Canadian Football League (CFL). A defensive tackle is a player who tries to stop the other team's offense, especially by tackling the quarterback or blocking runs.

Charles played college football for the Regina Rams in Canada before starting his professional career.

Playing in College

Stefan Charles played three seasons of CIS football for the Regina Rams. CIS football is the highest level of amateur football in Canada, played by university teams.

During his time with the Rams, he played in 22 games. He made 50 tackles, which means he stopped the opposing team's players 50 times. He also had 9.5 sacks, which is when a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. He also had 19.5 tackles for losses, meaning he stopped players before they could gain yards.

He missed part of his fourth season due to a hand injury. Before joining the Regina Rams, he played for the Metro Toronto Wildcats.

Becoming a Professional Player

The CFL Draft

The CFL Draft is where teams in the Canadian Football League choose new players from colleges and universities. Stefan Charles was considered one of the top players before the 2013 CFL Draft. He was ranked number one in September 2012.

After showing his skills at the 2013 CFL Evaluation Camp, he became the second-ranked Canadian player. The Edmonton Eskimos (now the Edmonton Elks) chose him with the 10th overall pick in the 2013 CFL Draft.

The NFL Draft

The NFL Draft is similar to the CFL Draft, but for teams in the National Football League in the United States. Before the 2013 NFL Draft, several NFL teams were interested in Stefan Charles, including the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.

Even though many teams were interested, Charles was not chosen in the 2013 NFL Draft. However, he still got a chance to play in the NFL.

Playing in the NFL

Tennessee Titans

After the NFL Draft, Stefan Charles signed with the Tennessee Titans on May 9, 2013. He was later moved to their practice squad, which is a group of players who train with the team but are not on the main roster.

Buffalo Bills

On October 30, 2013, the Buffalo Bills signed Charles from the Titans' practice squad. He played for the Bills for three seasons, from 2013 to 2015.

During the 2015 NFL season, he played in 13 games and started one. He made 13 tackles, had one sack, and forced one fumble. Forcing a fumble means he hit the ball carrier, causing them to drop the ball.

Other NFL Teams

After playing for the Buffalo Bills, Stefan Charles continued his NFL career with several other teams:

Playing in Other Leagues

San Antonio Commanders

In 2019, Stefan Charles played for the San Antonio Commanders in the Alliance of American Football (AAF). This was a new professional football league that started in 2019.

Atlanta Falcons

Later in 2019, Charles signed with the Atlanta Falcons for a short time.

Playing in the CFL Again

Edmonton Eskimos / Elks

Stefan Charles returned to the Canadian Football League in 2019, signing with the Edmonton Eskimos. This was the team that originally drafted him in 2013. He was on their practice and reserve rosters but did not play in a game in 2019. The 2020 CFL season was canceled, so he did not play that year either.

He returned to the Edmonton team, now called the Edmonton Elks, in 2022 but was released before the season started.

Ottawa Redblacks

In 2021, Charles signed with the Ottawa Redblacks, another team in the CFL.
