Stefan Thesker (born 11 April 1991) is a German professional footballer. He plays as a centre back for the Austrian club SKN St. Pölten.

Stefan Thesker's Club Career

Stefan Thesker started his football journey in Germany. He then moved to the Netherlands to play for different clubs.

Playing for Twente

Stefan was born in Ahaus, Germany. He played for youth teams like TuS Wüllen and Schalke 04. In 2005, he moved to the Netherlands and joined Twente. Four years later, he signed his first professional contract with them.

After playing for Jong FC Twente (the reserve team), Stefan was loaned to Fortuna Sittard in January 2011. He made his debut for Fortuna Sittard on January 21, 2011. He played as a substitute in a match they lost 3–0 against Dordrecht. Stefan played 15 games for Fortuna Sittard. He returned to Twente at the end of the 2010–11 season.

Time at 1899 Hoffenheim

After seven years playing abroad, Stefan returned to Germany. He signed with Bundesliga team 1899 Hoffenheim on January 2, 2012. The club's managing director, Ernst Tanner, was happy about the move. He said Stefan was a promising young German player from a great Dutch training system.

Stefan first played for the 1899 Hoffenheim II squad (the reserve team). In the 2012–13 season, he was sometimes on the main team's substitute bench. He had an Achilles injury that kept him from playing for several months. After recovering, he made his main team debut on March 9, 2013. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win against Greuther Fürth.

In the 2013–14 season, Stefan played two games for the main team. These were against Nürnberg and Schalke 04. However, he found it hard to get playing time. He also suffered from torn ligament injuries. He mostly played for the reserve team that season.

On April 30, 2014, it was announced that Stefan would join Hannover 96. He signed a deal to move there on July 1, 2014, for free. He had turned down a new contract with 1899 Hoffenheim.

Playing for Hannover 96

When Stefan joined Hannover 96, he received the number seventeen shirt. During the pre-season, he had a thigh injury. Luckily, he recovered in time for the start of the season.

Stefan's chances to play for the main team at Hannover 96 were limited. He mostly played for the reserve team. He was called up to the main team in late October. On November 1, 2014, he made his debut for Hannover 96. He came on as a substitute in a 1–0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt. He also played a full game on November 7, 2014, in a 2–0 win over Hertha BSC.

Moving to Greuther Fürth

On January 5, 2015, Stefan joined Greuther Fürth. He signed a two-year contract that would keep him there until 2017.

Stefan made his debut for Greuther Fürth on February 6, 2015. He played the whole game in a 1–0 loss against Ingolstadt 04. In the next game, on February 16, 2015, he helped set up the only goal in a 1–0 win against St. Pauli. He became a regular player for the team during the 2014–15 season, playing eleven games.

At the start of the 2015–16 season, Stefan was not playing as much. He was often on the substitute bench. However, he managed to get back into the main team in late October. He played nine games in the first half of the season.

Second Time at Twente

On January 28, 2016, Stefan returned to Twente on a loan until the end of the season.

Three days later, on January 31, 2016, he made his Twente debut. He played 60 minutes in a 3–1 win over Utrecht. After being out for two months due to a health issue, he returned to play for the reserve team. Five days after returning, Stefan scored his first two goals for Twente. This happened in a 2–2 draw against AZ Alkmaar. He finished the 2015–16 season with eight games played and two goals.

On August 17, 2016, Stefan signed a three-year contract to stay with Twente permanently. He became the team captain at the start of the season. His first game after signing permanently was the opening game of the season. He helped set up the only goal for his team in a 2–1 loss against Excelsior. He continued to be a regular player for the club. Stefan played 30 games in all competitions that season. He helped the club finish in 7th place in the league.

Playing for Holstein Kiel

In June 2018, Stefan joined 2. Bundesliga team Holstein Kiel. He signed a three-year contract that lasted until 2021.

Current Club: SKN St. Pölten

On July 11, 2023, Stefan signed a three-year contract with SKN St. Pölten in Austria.

Stefan Thesker's International Career

On August 9, 2012, Stefan was called up to play for the Germany U21 team. He did very well in his debut for Germany U21. He helped set up two goals in a big 6–1 win against Argentina U20.

Stefan was called up again for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He started all three matches at the tournament. Germany U21 was eliminated from the group stage. Overall, he played seven games for the Germany U21 team.

Stefan Thesker's Personal Life

In December 2015, Stefan had a difficult moment. He later apologized for his actions and faced a fine. He was also moved to the reserve team for a period.

In January 2017, Stefan recovered from a health challenge. He made a full recovery and hoped to return to playing football.

On March 14, 2020, Stefan tested positive for COVID-19.
