Stefan Thesker's Club Journey
Early Years at Twente
Stefan Thesker was born in Ahaus, Germany. He started playing football in youth teams like TuS Wüllen and Schalke 04. In 2005, he moved to the Netherlands and joined Twente. Four years later, he signed his first professional contract with the club.
While at Twente, Stefan also played for their youth team, Jong FC Twente. In January 2011, he was loaned to Fortuna Sittard to gain more experience. He made his debut for Fortuna Sittard on January 21, 2011, in a match against Dordrecht. He played in 15 games for Fortuna Sittard before returning to Twente at the end of the 2010–11 season.
Time at 1899 Hoffenheim
After seven years in the Netherlands, Stefan returned to Germany. On January 2, 2012, he signed with Bundesliga club 1899 Hoffenheim. The club's managing director, Ernst Tanner, was excited about Stefan joining. He said Stefan was a promising young German player who would continue to develop with them.
When he first joined, Stefan played for the 1899 Hoffenheim II team for two seasons. In the 2012–13 season, he was sometimes on the bench for the main team. He faced a foot injury that kept him out for several months. After recovering, he finally made his debut for the main TSG 1899 Hoffenheim team on March 9, 2013. This was in a 1–0 win against Greuther Fürth. He started playing more regularly towards the end of that season.
In the 2013–14 season, Stefan played in two matches for the main team. However, he found it hard to get regular playing time. He also suffered from torn ligament injuries. He spent most of the season with the reserve team. His contract with 1899 Hoffenheim ended in 2014.
Moving to Hannover 96
On April 30, 2014, it was announced that Stefan would join Hannover 96. He signed a contract to move there on July 1, 2014, as a free player. He chose Hannover 96 after turning down a new contract from 1899 Hoffenheim.
At Hannover 96, Stefan was given the number seventeen jersey. He had a thigh injury during the pre-season but recovered in time for the start of the new season. However, he did not get many chances to play for the main team. He mostly played for the reserve squad.
He made his debut for Hannover 96 on November 1, 2014, in a 1–0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt. He played another game on November 7, 2014, a 2–0 win over Hertha BSC. Even though he only played two games, Stefan felt his time there helped him grow as a player.
Playing for Greuther Fürth
On January 5, 2015, Stefan joined Greuther Fürth. He signed a two-year contract that would keep him there until 2017.
Stefan played his first game for Greuther Fürth on February 6, 2015, in a 1–0 loss against Ingolstadt 04. In his next game, on February 16, 2015, he helped set up the only goal in a 1–0 win against St. Pauli. He became a regular player for the team during the 2014–15 season, playing in eleven matches.
At the start of the 2015–16 season, Stefan did not play as much. He was often on the substitute bench. However, he did help set up a goal in a 3–2 loss against St. Pauli on August 16, 2015. He started playing more regularly again in late October. He played nine games in the first half of that season.
Return to Twente
On January 28, 2016, Stefan returned to Twente on a loan deal until the end of the season.
He made his Twente debut on January 31, 2016, in a 3–1 win over Utrecht. After facing a serious health challenge that kept him out for two months, he returned to play for the reserve team on March 15, 2016. Just five days later, Stefan scored his first two goals for Twente in a 2–2 draw against AZ Alkmaar. He finished the 2015–16 season with eight appearances and two goals.
On August 17, 2016, Stefan signed a three-year contract to stay with Twente permanently. He was also chosen to be the team captain for the season. His first game as a permanent player and captain was the opening match of the season. He helped set up a goal in a 2–1 loss against Excelsior. He continued to be a regular player for Twente. Even though he had a few short breaks due to injuries, Stefan played 30 games in his first full season back. He helped the club finish 7th in the league.
