Stende is a small town located in Latvia. It's a place with an interesting past and a friendly community. The town was officially granted its city rights in 1991. Stende is part of the Talsi Municipality and is known for its quiet charm.

Discovering Stende's Past

Stende has a long history, starting way back in the 14th century. It began as a settlement on the land of the Stende Manor. A manor was like a large estate with a big house, owned by a powerful family.

Early Beginnings of Stende

The original owner of the Stende Manor was a nobleman named Philipp von der Brüggen. He received this land from the Livonian Order. The Livonian Order was a group of knights who played a big role in the history of this region.

How the Railway Changed Stende

Stende started to grow much faster in 1904. This happened when a railway station was built there. The railway line connected Riga, the capital of Latvia, to Ventspils, a port city. This made it easier for people and goods to travel to and from Stende.

Stende During World War I

During the First World War in 1915, German troops took control of Stende. To help supply their soldiers, the Germans built a special narrow-gauge railway. This smaller railway connected Stende to the nearby port of Roja. Supplies could then be moved from Roja to Stende and sent further using the main railway line.

Becoming a Town

After many years as a settlement, Stende officially became a town in 1991. This was an important step for the community.
