Stephen Hartley Dorff Jr. (born July 29, 1973) is an American actor. He started acting when he was a child. One of his first big roles was in the horror film The Gate (1987). Later, he became well-known for playing Stuart Sutcliffe in Backbeat (1994). He also gained a lot of attention for his role as Deacon Frost in the superhero movie Blade (1998).
Stephen Dorff has played many interesting characters. These include the main role in Cecil B. DeMented (2000) and Johnny Marco in Somewhere (2010). He also appeared as Britney Spears’ boyfriend in her music video for "Everytime" in 2004. He has also had important supporting roles in films like World Trade Center (2006) and Public Enemies (2009). More recently, he was known for playing Roland West in the TV show True Detective (2019).

Early life and family
Stephen Dorff was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother was Nancy, and his father is Steve Dorff, a famous composer and music producer. His father is Jewish, and his mother was Catholic. Stephen grew up in Los Angeles, where his father worked. He started acting very young, appearing in commercials for big companies like Kraft and Mattel. He also went to several private schools. Stephen had a brother named Andrew (1976–2016) who was a country music songwriter.
Acting career highlights
Stephen Dorff began his acting journey in the late 1980s. He got some small roles before starring in The Gate (1987). This horror film was about a boy who finds a strange hole in his backyard. The movie did quite well at the box office.
He also made guest appearances on popular TV shows. These included Diff'rent Strokes, Family Ties, Blossom, Roseanne, and Married... with Children. In 1990, he got a main role with Patty Duke in the TV movie Always Remember I Love You. In 1992, he starred in The Power of One alongside famous actors like Sir John Gielgud and Morgan Freeman.
A year later, in 1993, he appeared in the music video for "Cryin'" by the rock band Aerosmith, playing the boyfriend of teen idol Alicia Silverstone. In 1994, Dorff played Stuart Sutcliffe, often called the "fifth Beatle," in the film Backbeat. His acting in this movie was highly praised.
In 1996, he acted in Space Truckers and played Candy Darling in I Shot Andy Warhol. This film was about Valerie Solanas and the pop art artist Andy Warhol. In 1997, he was the main character in Blood and Wine, which had many well-known actors.
One of his most famous roles came in 1998. He played the evil vampire Deacon Frost in the Marvel Comics superhero film, Blade. In 2004, he starred in the music video for "Everytime" by Britney Spears, playing her boyfriend.
In 2010, Stephen Dorff starred in the drama Somewhere with Elle Fanning. This movie was directed by Sofia Coppola. He said that getting this role helped him a lot during a difficult time after losing his mother.
Later, in 2017, he played Texas Ranger Hal Hartman in Leatherface, which is a prequel to the Texas Chain Saw Massacre series. In 2019, he starred as Detective Roland West in the third season of the HBO series True Detective.
