Sterling Campbell (born May 3, 1964) is an American drummer and songwriter. He has worked with many famous musicians and bands. Some of these include the B-52s, Duran Duran, Soul Asylum, Cyndi Lauper, and David Bowie.

Early Life and Musical Start

Sterling Campbell grew up in New York City. He was part of an African-American family with five older brothers. His brothers loved all kinds of music, from funk to rock. Sterling started learning to play the drums when he was twelve years old.

When he was fourteen, Dennis Davis, who was the drummer for David Bowie, moved into Sterling's apartment building. Dennis invited Sterling to a David Bowie concert. This experience really inspired Sterling to practice his drums even more. He went to the High School of Music & Art, a special school for performing arts. After graduating, Sterling practiced a lot and wrote his own songs. He began working as a session musician, playing drums for recordings and live shows.

A Career in Music

Sterling Campbell became well-known in 1986. He toured with pop star Cyndi Lauper on her "True Colors World Tour." For the next ten years, he played with several famous bands. These bands played different types of music.

In 1989, Sterling joined the band Duran Duran. Later, in 1991, he started working with Soul Asylum as a session musician. He played on half of the songs for their 1992 album, Grave Dancer's Union. This included their hit song "Runaway Train", which won a Grammy Award. Sterling then became the full-time drummer for Soul Asylum from 1995 to 1998.

Sterling Campbell also began recording with music legend David Bowie in 1991. He officially joined Bowie's band in 1992. Sterling toured with David Bowie for fourteen years, until 2004. He has also worked with other great artists like David Byrne, the B-52s, Chic, Tina Turner, and Gustavo Cerati. In 2007, he started touring with the B-52s again and continued with them until 2012.

Advocating for Human Rights

In 1996, Sterling Campbell began practicing Falun Gong. This is a peaceful meditation practice. In 2002, he traveled to Beijing, China, to speak out against the way Falun Gong followers were being treated there. He has continued to be an advocate for human rights in China.
