Sterling Sharp's Baseball Journey
Starting Out: High School and College Baseball
Sterling Sharp was first chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 2013 MLB draft. At the time, he was playing for North Farmington High School in Michigan. Instead of signing with the Braves, he decided to go to Eastern Michigan University to play college baseball.
Three years later, in 2016, the Washington Nationals drafted him. By then, Sharp had moved to Drury University. He was only the second player from Drury University to be drafted by an MLB team. After being drafted by the Nationals, he decided to sign and begin his professional career.
Playing for the Washington Nationals
Sharp started his professional career with the GCL Nationals, a minor league team. He played very well, winning 3 games and having a low earned run average (ERA) of 3.24. An ERA measures how many runs a pitcher allows per game. Because of his good performance, he was moved up to another team, the Auburn Doubledays.
In 2017, Sharp played for the Hagerstown Suns and later the Potomac Nationals. He pitched in 24 games, starting 22 of them. He finished the season with 6 wins and 11 losses, and an ERA of 3.97. He also helped the main Washington Nationals team by pitching to players who were recovering from injuries.
In 2018, Sharp returned to the Potomac Nationals and was chosen as an All-Star for the Carolina League. He was then promoted to the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. He was even ranked as one of the top young players, or "prospects," in the Nationals organization. Baseball America also ranked him as the eighth-best prospect for the Nationals after the 2018 season.
In 2019, Sharp faced some challenges with injuries, missing almost three months of the season. To make up for lost time, he played in the Arizona Fall League. He even earned "pitcher-of-the-week" honors there.
Time with the Miami Marlins
On December 12, 2019, the Miami Marlins chose Sterling Sharp in the Rule 5 draft. This is a special draft where teams can pick players from other teams' minor league systems. He did not play in the minor leagues in 2020 because that season was canceled.
On August 5, 2020, Sharp made his big debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Marlins. However, he was later moved off the team's main roster on August 24. In his four MLB games, he had an ERA of 10.13, allowing 6 runs in just over 5 innings. He also struck out three batters.
Back with the Washington Nationals
On August 27, 2020, Sharp returned to the Washington Nationals organization. He joined their training site in Virginia. In 2021, he played for both the Double-A Harrisburg team and the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. He had 4 wins and 6 losses, with an ERA of 4.43. He also struck out 59 batters.
Sharp continued to play for Rochester in 2022. He had 2 wins and 5 losses, with an ERA of 6.62. On August 5, 2022, the Nationals released him from their team.
Playing for the Boston Red Sox
On August 9, 2022, Sharp signed a new contract with the Boston Red Sox minor league team. He made 7 starts for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. He pitched very well, with a 3.18 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 34 innings. After the season, he became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.
On January 10, 2023, Sharp signed again with the Red Sox. He returned to the Portland Sea Dogs, where he made 20 appearances. He finished the season with 3 wins and 5 losses, and an ERA of 5.36. He became a free agent again on November 6, 2023.
Recent Teams: Lake Country DockHounds and Dorados de Chihuahua
On February 26, 2024, Sharp signed with the Lake Country DockHounds in the American Association of Professional Baseball. In 8 games, he had 1 win and 2 losses, with a good ERA of 3.28.
On April 15, 2025, Sharp signed with the Dorados de Chihuahua in the Mexican League. He played in three games but struggled, with an ERA of 7.20. He was released by the team on April 29, 2025.
Current Team: Long Island Ducks
On May 13, 2025, Sterling Sharp signed with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. He is currently playing for this team.
Sterling Sharp's Pitching Style
Sterling Sharp pitches with his right hand. In 2017, he started to develop a special pitch called a "sinker." He learned this by watching other famous pitchers. By 2018, the sinker became his main pitch, used even more often than his regular fastball.
Besides his sinker and fastball, Sharp also throws a good "changeup" and a "slider." These are different types of pitches that make the ball move in tricky ways, making it harder for batters to hit.
Many people notice that Sterling Sharp's name is very similar to Sterling Sharpe, a famous retired football player.
Personal Life
Sterling Sharp is a Catholic. He married his wife, Chloe, in 2021 at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
