Sterling Barksdale Sharp (born May 30, 1995) is an American professional baseball pitcher. He plays for the Lake Country DockHounds in a league called the American Association of Professional Baseball. Sterling has also played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Miami Marlins.

Sterling Sharp's Baseball Journey

Starting in High School and College

Sterling Sharp was first chosen by the Atlanta Braves in the 2013 MLB draft. This was when he was still in high school at North Farmington High School in Michigan. But he decided not to sign with them. Instead, he chose to go to Eastern Michigan University to play college baseball.

Three years later, in 2016, Sterling was drafted again. This time, the Washington Nationals picked him. By then, he had moved to Drury University. He was only the second player from Drury to be drafted by an MLB team. After being drafted, he decided to sign with the Nationals.

Playing for the Washington Nationals

Sterling began his professional career with the GCL Nationals. He played well there, winning three games and having a good earned run average (ERA). An ERA shows how many runs a pitcher allows per game. Because he did so well, he was moved up to another team, the Auburn Doubledays.

In 2017, he continued to play in the minor leagues. He pitched for the Hagerstown Suns and then the Potomac Nationals. He played in many games, starting most of them. He even helped the main Washington Nationals team practice by pitching to players who were recovering from injuries.

In 2018, Sterling returned to the Potomac Nationals. He was chosen as an All-Star for his league, which means he was one of the best players. He then moved up to the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. People started to notice him, and he was named one of the top young players, or "prospects," for the Nationals team.

In 2019, Sterling had some challenges. He was injured and missed almost three months of playing time. To make up for it, he played in a special league called the Arizona Fall League. He even won an award there for being the pitcher of the week.

Time with the Miami Marlins

On December 12, 2019, the Miami Marlins picked Sterling Sharp in something called the Rule 5 draft. This draft allows teams to pick players from other teams' minor league systems.

In 2020, Sterling made his big debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) on August 5. He pitched in four games for the Marlins. After a short time, he was sent back to the Nationals.

Back with the Washington Nationals

On August 27, 2020, Sterling returned to the Nationals team. He spent time at their special training site. In 2021, he played for both the Double-A Harrisburg team and the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings. He continued to pitch in many games, striking out many batters.

In 2022, Sterling played for Rochester again. On August 5, 2022, the Nationals decided to release him from their team.

Playing for the Boston Red Sox

Soon after, on August 9, 2022, Sterling signed a new contract with the Boston Red Sox. He played for their Double-A team, the Portland Sea Dogs. He pitched very well for them. After the season, he became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.

He re-signed with the Red Sox in January 2023 and played for the Portland Sea Dogs again. He continued to pitch in many games. After that season, he became a free agent once more.

Joining the Lake Country DockHounds

On February 26, 2024, Sterling Sharp signed with the Lake Country DockHounds. This team is part of the American Association of Professional Baseball. He has been pitching for them since then.

Sterling Sharp's Pitching Style

Sterling Sharp throws the baseball with his right hand. He has a special pitch called a "sinker." This pitch moves downwards as it gets to the batter. He learned this pitch by watching other famous pitchers. His sinker became his main pitch.

Besides his sinker, he also throws a regular fastball, which is a very fast pitch. He also has a good changeup, which is a slower pitch that fools batters, and a slider, which moves sideways.

People sometimes notice that Sterling's name is very similar to Sterling Sharpe, a famous football player.

Personal Life

Sterling Sharp is a Catholic. He got married to his wife, Chloe, in 2021. Their wedding took place in Detroit.
