Steven Hillel Paikin (born June 9, 1960) is a Canadian journalist, author, and producer of documentaries. He is well-known for his work at TVOntario (TVO). TVO is a public TV channel in Ontario, Canada. Steve Paikin is the main host of TVO's important news show, The Agenda with Steve Paikin.
Early Life and Education
Steve Paikin was born in Hamilton, Ontario. His father was Lawrence Sidney Paikin, who owned a steel company. His mother was Marina Suzanne Sibulash. Marina Paikin was honored with the Order of Canada for her work in education and health. This award is one of the highest honors in Canada. Steve Paikin is from a Jewish family.
He finished high school in 1978. Then, he went to the University of Toronto and earned a degree in 1981. Later, he got his master's degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University. While at the University of Toronto, he was the sports editor for the student newspaper. He also called play-by-play for the university's hockey and football games on the radio.
Steve Paikin's Career
Steve Paikin started his career working for CBC Television in Toronto. He was a news anchor and reported on politics at Queen's Park. He also hosted a daily news show on CBC Newsworld. Before that, he worked in radio and for newspapers. He reported for the Hamilton Spectator and was a reporter at Toronto City Hall for a radio station from 1982 to 1985.
In 1992, Paikin joined TVO. He hosted a political show called Between the Lines for two years. He also helped create Fourth Reading, a show about politics at Queen's Park, and hosted it for 14 years. In 1994, he became a co-host of Studio 2, a news program. In 1998, he helped create and hosted Diplomatic Immunity, a weekly show about world affairs.
In 2006, TVO started a new show called The Agenda with Steve Paikin. This show replaced Studio 2. Steve Paikin has been the host ever since.
Paikin is often chosen to lead important political debates. He has moderated debates for Canadian federal leaders in 2006, 2008, and 2011. He also moderated debates for Ontario provincial leaders many times. He was chosen to moderate the English-language federal leaders' debate for the 2025 Canadian federal election.
Besides hosting, Steve Paikin has produced several documentaries. These include Return to the Warsaw Ghetto and Chairman of the Board: The Life and Death of John Robarts. For his 1993 documentary, Return to the Warsaw Ghetto, he won several awards. These awards included the "Silver Screen Award" and honors at film festivals in Canada and China.
In 2012, a study found that Steve Paikin was the most influential journalist at Queen's Park on Twitter.
He has received special honorary degrees from several universities and colleges. In 2013, he was named chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury. This means he was a ceremonial head of the university. He held this position until 2021. In December 2013, he was given two very important awards: the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario.
Personal Life
Steve Paikin is married to Francesca Grosso. She is an author and has worked in health care policy in Canada. She also worked for a former Ontario health minister.
Steve Paikin has four children. One of his sons, Zach Paikin, used to be involved with the Liberal Party of Canada. Another son, Henry Paikin, worked for a Canadian Senator.
Steve Paikin has relatives who were also involved in public life. His cousin, Dr. Harry Paikin, was a school trustee in Hamilton for 30 years. Another cousin, Harold Paikin, was the mayor of Waterloo. Another cousin, Carol Paikin Miller, was a school trustee in Hamilton.
Steve Paikin is a fan of several sports teams. He supports the Toronto Maple Leafs (hockey), the Boston Red Sox (baseball), and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (football).
