Steven Diez (born March 17, 1991) is a professional tennis player from Canada. He used to play for Spain earlier in his career.

Steven Diez's Tennis Journey

From Spain to Canada

Steven Diez grew up mostly in Spain and played for that country when he first started his tennis career. Later, he decided to represent the country where he was born, Canada. He has played for the Canadian team in the Davis Cup. Steven was also part of the Canadian team that won the 2022 ATP Cup in 2022.

Early Career Highlights

Steven Diez started playing in professional tournaments in 2007. These were called ITF Futures tournaments. He didn't win his first matches, but he kept working hard.

In 2008, Steven won his very first professional match. This was at a tournament in Spain. He also started playing doubles and reached the semifinals in a few tournaments with his partners. By the end of 2008, he was ranked around 1190 in singles.

First Big Wins

The year 2009 was a big one for Steven. He reached the semifinals of a tournament in Spain. A couple of weeks later, he played in his first doubles final. He also got to play in a bigger tournament called an ATP Challenger event, where he reached the quarterfinals.

Later in 2009, Steven won his first ever singles title at a tournament in Spain. This was a very exciting moment for him! He finished that year ranked much higher, at world No. 571 in singles.

Playing for Canada

In 2010, Steven was asked to play for Canada in the Davis Cup. This was a special chance for him to represent his home country. He played against a top player from Colombia on a clay court. Even though he didn't win that match, it was an important step in his career.

That same year, Steven won his second singles title in Spain. He also got to play in some big tournaments in Canada, like the 2010 Rogers Cup. He kept improving his game and his rankings.

Reaching New Heights

Steven Diez continued to work hard and play in many tournaments around the world. In 2019, he reached his highest singles ranking ever, becoming world No. 134. This was a great achievement for him!

In 2020, Steven made his debut in a Grand Slam tournament, which is one of the four biggest tennis events in the world. He played in the 2020 French Open after trying to qualify for a major tournament 15 times before.

ATP Cup Champion

A major highlight for Steven came in 2022. He was part of the Canadian team that won the ATP Cup. They defeated the Spanish team in the final, which was a fantastic team victory!
